Engineering, Business, Finance, Accounting, Design and Marketing students wanted!
Joshua, who can join the Formula Salford team?
All students can join; only students from mechanical and aeronautical engineering can join the engineering team, unless they have significant experience outside of their studies.
What skills and qualifications are you specifically looking for?
What would students gain from joining the team?
World-class project experience and exposure to motorsport, F1, and the motorsport industry, students with formula student experience are often quoted as being 2 years ahead of other graduates with the practical skills for design and development, and exposure to the full product lifecycle. Business students get a unique look at the motorsport industry and many engineering and business students end up at F1 teams after graduating.
Students who successfully work on this project at learning the industry standard approaches and skills to bringing engineered products from concepts to delivery on both sides, technical engineering and project management and commercial awareness.
How can students join the team? What is the procedure?
Student who are interested in joining should email firstname.lastname@example.org to book a meeting to talk about what they are interested in doing within the project, there are a range of support frameworks in place to guide students through both business work in terms our project management and business development (sponsor capture) approach, and on the engineering side the product development framework to lead students through designing a component and having it manufactured and installed on the car.
What are currently pressing tasks / steps in not only building the car but also building a brand?
We are looking at recruiting website development students and graphic designers, to help with re-designing our website. We are also working hard on getting sponsors on board to secure our goal for this year, which is to go from a chassis to rolling chassis. The team is currently designing the steering, braking, suspension and cockpit systems. By the end of the year we will be able to roll the car around university!
Formula Salford was established in October 2015, when Joshua Jones, a Mechanical Engineering student saw an opportunity to be part of Formula Student. During an industrial placement at Cummins Turbo Technologies, he gained not only valuable experience but also met other engineering students who were involved with Formula Student. Joshua felt challenged and initiated Formula Salford so that the University of Salford could compete with its own team in the same international competition.
We are looking for strong personalities with the drive and determination to succeed in a world-class project. Our key areas are engineering and business, the engineering part of the project involves the full product development lifecycle from concept to manufacture and delivery, giving student’s unrivalled practical experience.
The business side of the project involves growing the team’s resources in both recruiting and marketing, and also working with companies to secure team sponsorship to finance the vehicle development and project costs, giving the students unrivalled entrepreneurial experience.
Besides acquiring sponsors Formula Salford realized how essential it is to form a crew, which is characterized by a set of skills that are not necessarily limited to engineering skills. Formula Salford is looking for team members from all sorts of backgrounds to make the dream come true: designing, developing and manufacturing a formula style racecar. Building a car is a multi-year project that requires a multi-disciplinary skill set involving students from the school of computing science and engineering, and Salford business school.
