The new academic year is well underway, as is Formula Salford's work towards Formula Student 2017. Formula Salford will be entering a Class 2 car into FS17, before taking the step up to Class 1 for FS18.
Formula Student is Europe’s most established educational motorsport competition, which culminates each academic year in a competition at the Silverstone grand prix track where teams from all over the world meet to show off what they have achieved. In the Class 2 competition each team is marked on three aspects: Design, Cost and Business Presentation. The total marks across these three categories determines how high a team places in the final results.
Formula Salford’s trip to Silverstone for FSAE UK 2016 was a success, finishing 18th out of 34 Class 2 teams, while exceeding expectations in Business Presentation, coming 2nd out of the UK competitors. Considering this was in our first year, the results were a fantastic achievement for the team. However, we know we are capable of doing better and this year’s larger team is determined to prove just that.
As part of the plan to improve our results, we have introduced a business team to take control of securing funding for the project and creating and maintaining a successful brand, as well as allowing the engineering team to concentrate fully on building a cost-effective, well-designed Class 2 F1 Type car. The business team is currently six students strong and growing, with members from different courses bringing different expertise and creative inputs, and is already visibly accelerating and improving the project’s progress and branding.
The business team will also be organising the Formula Salford’s participation in events across the year, starting with the Creative Entrepreneur event at Media City UK on 23rd of November, an event which will entertain and inform hundreds of students, academics and business people. We hope to see you there!
